Geekdom

Many people who know me are aware that I am a nerd, geek, pop culture enthusiast. But I don’t think they know precisely what I love. This post will be about the various things that interest me.

  1. Comics (all formats) – I’m reading Savage Dragon hardcover now. It’s a great 90’s Image Comics book with a cool story and a team up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I’m also reading Geiger, a new series about a post apocalyptic world of radioactive chaos. There’s a man who lives beyond the wasteland who is feared by all. Some call him Joe Glow, some call him the Meltdown Man. But his name…is Geiger. It’s a great story and setting, a must-read for post apocalypse fans. Some of my favorites are Amazing Spider-man, Alien, Star Wars and Batman. They’re the best for now, but I change my mind often.
  2. I like board games (including card games and RPGs) that are simple rather than complex. Some of the games I enjoy are: Dice Throne: A game where you fight with dice and cards that have abilities and modifiers. You try to be the last one standing. Dungeons and Dragons: A game where you role-play as a hero in a story that the Dungeon Master creates. You make choices that affect the outcome, but some of them can be deadly. Let’s Summon Demons: A game where you collect cards of good or bad kids with abilities. You sacrifice three kids to reveal one of your three demons, which also have abilities. The game is very humorous with the names of the kids and the demons. Rad Lands: A game where you try to destroy your opponent’s bases with cards of people or events. The people have abilities that can impact the other side’s people and bases. You need water to buy cards, which you start with three and refresh every round. You can increase your water level too. The winner is the one who eliminates all three bases. Some of the classic family games I like are Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, and Uno. Some others that I don’t play often are Zombicide, Clank, Star Wars Outer Rim, and Nemesis, which I haven’t played yet.
  3. Video Games. I haven’t played video games for a while. Some of the games I played were Baldur’s Gate 3, The Forest, WWE 2k23 and Starfield. I like open world games. Fallout 4 and Skyrim are fun games with different settings and enemies. You can explore, find weapons and items, and build things. Spider-man games are also great, where you swing around New York City as Peter Parker or Mile Morales and fight criminals and supervillains. Diablo 4 is a hard game with a fantasy setting where you have to defeat Lilith, a powerful demon queen. Baldur’s Gate is based on Dungeons and Dragons. One of the main enemies is the Absolute, a strong Mind Flayer. There are other enemies, but I haven’t finished the game. Another game I played was City of Heroes, where you create a superhero and level up by fighting different bad guys in the city. The game was shut down by NCSoft, but people made their own servers, and the game continues.
  4. One of the things I enjoy most is getting original art from comic creators. It’s one of my main reasons for attending conventions. I also like having comics signed by those creators. But I haven’t been able to go to any geek conventions for several years because they were too expensive for me. Statues and action figures are also fun to collect. I have a good number of both, from Spider-man, Iron-man, Batman and others. Many of them belong to my wife. She is only a geek because she likes the art and statues.
  5. Movies – I am all about the movies. I enjoy everything from science fiction, fantasy, Horror, Action and even Rom Coms. I don’t collect movies on Blu-Ray or DVD mainly because streaming is the new television. I really should still buy movies and tv shows as I then can watch them whenever I want. I still have quite a few DVD’s and BluRays put away in boxes.
  6. Music – I enjoy various genres of music, such as classical, jazz, country, and rock. Some of the artists I like now are Shinedown, Chris Stapleton, Ice Nine Kills, Godsmack, Disturbed and Five Finger Death Punch. There are many more that I won’t list here. I’m open to listening to any music once or more to see if I like it.

This is just about all the my geeky loves. I may have missed something, but this covers most of it. I hope this was enlightening to some of you. I will have another blog post soon, but until then I leave you with this.. I’ve seen attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
